Craige’s story
With the right support in place, everyday technology from Sanctuary LumaLiving can help people feel confident, connected and ready to say yes to more of life. When reassurance fits naturally into daily routines, the world feels more open and moments feel possible again.
Before moving into Sanctuary Supported Living’s Studfield Court, Craige lived on his own. As the frequency of his epileptic fits increased, his confidence was gradually affected and he began to feel unsure about leaving home. With very little social interaction, Craige became increasingly isolated and disconnected from the world around him.
When Craige was found confused at the bottom of a staircase, he was referred to Sanctuary Supported Living and, in 2022, moved into Studfield Court which provides care and support for people with disabilities.
As Craige settled into life at Studfield Court, he began to find his rhythm again. Feeling more supported, he started venturing out and reconnecting with familiar places and routines. On a few occasions, he became disoriented while out and was reported missing by staff. In one instance, he was found several miles away late at night by the police.
Wanting to support Craige’s independence while helping him feel more confident moving through his day, staff suggested he speak with Sanctuary LumaLiving to explore how connected, everyday technology could fit naturally into his life, both at home and out in the community.
Soon after, an assessor from the Sanctuary LumaLiving team visited Craige to talk through his needs and offer a free, hands-on demonstration, giving him time to explore options at his own pace. Determined to keep enjoying his social life and make the most of everyday moments, Craige chose Sanctuary LumaLiving’s Personal GPS Alarm. Worn discreetly around his neck, it includes a simple one-touch SOS button, offering quiet reassurance wherever his day takes him.
Since then, Craige’s confidence has grown and he has been able to move around the local area independently again. The Personal GPS Alarm supports his freedom to explore, helping him feel steady and sure as he goes about his daily routines, whether he is popping out or spending time with friends.
Out and about package:
When Craige had a seizure at his local pub, staff were quick to activate his Sanctuary LumaLiving’s Personal GPS Alarm. This alerted Sanctuary’s in-house, 24/7 call monitoring and technology installation service, who arranged immediate help and called an ambulance. Staff at Studfield Court were also aware that something had happened and knew that Craige was safe and supported. Just as importantly, the experience did not knock Craige’s confidence, allowing him to return to his usual routines and continue enjoying life out and about.
Support Assistant, Nichola Kirkland, said: “Using assistive technology has given Craige the freedom to live life to the full where he can be part of his community. As he enjoys walking, shopping, and nipping down to the local pub, he can make the most of social interaction and building friendships.”
Craige added: “My Personal GPS Alarm helps me feel confident getting out and about and staying connected with the people around me. I’ve even caught the train to visit my family with support from my key worker.”
